Malibu bills itself as "27 miles of scenic beauty" and that's an accurate self-assessment. As you drive the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH,) the main road in and out of Malibu, you'll be awed by the view as you crest a hill or come around a bend. White sand beaches spread out before you and mansions sit on bluffs or up in the hills overlooking the ocean. The world famous Malibu Colony Beach is celebrity paradise. While the scenic beauty is breathtaking, rock slides are common on the PCH and can shut traffic down for hours. Brush fires burn out of control, destroying everything in their path. Most homes here hug the coast, though you will find some secluded houses up in the canyons and mountains that separate Malibu from the rest of LA. Shops and dining are stretched out along PCH. Malibu owes its name to the Chumash, Native Americans who originally settled there and named it Humaliwo, which means "the surf sounds loudly.” The area was highly secluded until 1929 when the Pacific Coast Highway was built. Now Malibu is a thoroughfare for many vacationers driving up and down the California coast, and a highly revered destination for Los Angeles locals.
